Zauberberg, meaning 'Magic Mountain', is a French Country estate set high on Salt Spring Island's Seymour Heights, backed by the old-growth forests of Mt Maxwell Provincial Park. The brief was to create interiors that honoured the European-inspired architecture while feeling warm, collected, and deeply personal.
The living room centres around a recessed stone fireplace with double-height vaulted ceilings and exposed white beams. The palette is soft and grounded: warm cream walls, pale oak floors, and a curated mix of contemporary and vintage furniture. Kilim textiles, a deep burgundy armchair, and carefully placed artwork give the space a layered, travelled quality without feeling cluttered.
In the dining room, a live-edge wood table sits beneath three matte black Tom Dixon pendant lights, surrounded by multicoloured Eames shell chairs. The stone fireplace with a floating timber mantel anchors the room, while floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light and frame views over the islands. The wood-paneled ceiling adds warmth overhead.
The kitchen balances function and beauty with a generous maple butcher-block island, floating timber shelves, and oversized white industrial pendants. Stainless steel appliances sit alongside handmade ceramics and collected art, creating a space that feels ready to cook in and linger around.
A dedicated library features floor-to-ceiling built-in shelving wrapping two walls, filled with a personal collection of books and objects. A linen reading chair with a sheepskin throw sits beside a walnut writing desk, making the room feel like a retreat within a retreat.
